What is Liposuction?

Liposuction, also known as lipoplasty, liposculpture, lipo-shaping, is the redesign of body contours by removing excess fat from various parts of the body. Small incisions are made in the area of concern, and negative pressure is applied through the use of special cannulas to remove excess fat.

Can I Lose Weight Through Liposuction?

Liposuction is never used for weight loss purposes. Removing excess fat in large quantities for weight loss often leads to instability and undesired conditions in the body. In addition to health risks, it causes the skin to sag due to the loss of a large amount of tissue from under the skin.

How Does a Patient's Personal Traits Affect the Liposuction Procedure and Results?

Because of the high level of skin elasticity at younger ages, relatively more fat can be removed from younger patients. In skins with reduced elasticity due to age and smoking, the removal of inappropriate amounts of fat will result in sagging skin.

Therefore the planning before the liposuction procedure is very important, and different according to each patient'’s needs. It is essential to be able to accurately assess how much fat can be removed from which area as this is different from patient to patient. For this reason liposuction surgery must be performed by plastic surgery specialists, who have experience working in this area.

Is Liposuction Risky?

When the purpose is appropriate and the right technique is applied, liposuction is one of those procedures which provides very pleasing and satisfying results in the field of plastic surgery.
However, there have been some question marks about liposuction procedures due to negative media reports by some patients who have experienced poor results with liposuction procedures that have gone wrong.
Serious complications can occur when liposuction is performed by doctors who are not experienced in liposuction, and who are not experts in the field of Cosmetic and Plastic Surgery. When liposuction is performed with incorrect technical equipment and planning, the situation is further complicated. Of particular importance is the the highly undesirable practice of such practitioners to aim for sensational results by taking the risk of removing too much fat from the body. For this reason, care should be taken to choose a reliable physician with an ethical approach.
Apart from this, with appropriate planning, there is no increased risk in liposuction as compared with other cosmetic procedures. As long as it is performed by an expert in cosmetic and plastic surgery.

Which Regions of The Body Can be Treated With Liposuction?

Liposuction is applied to different regions of the body. The regions in the body that are suitable for liposuction are defined as fat storage zones that remain despite compliance with dieting, weight loss programs and regular exercise. The remaining excess fat may distort body proportions or cause irregularities in contour.
Contour irregularities commonly occur in the following areas;
    •  Hips
    •  Thighs
    •  Inner thigh
    •  The lower and upper abdomen
    •  Sides of the abdomen
    •  Upper arm
    •  Inner knee
In addition for males;
    •  Uncommon breast enlargement, called gynecomastia
    •  The sides of the breasts
    •  Under the chin

Is It Possible to Eliminate Surface Irregularities Created by Cellulite Through Liposuction?

When the appropriate technique is used, it is possible to reduce cellulite and other surface irregularities. However, liposuction should not be considered as a treatment for surface irregularities.
The purpose of liposuction is to improve the contours of the body. When applied with this purpose in mind, very satisfying results are obtained.

Can the Fat Removed Through Liposuction be Used as a Filler in Another Part of My Body?

If you have made a decision to re-use the removed fat tissue in consultation with your doctor before the surgery, it can be used as a filler in another part of your body. (See Autolog Fat Graft for further information)

What Kind of Anesthesia is Used for Liposuction?

Liposuction is usually performed under sedation with what is known as "“sedoanalgesia"” or under general anesthesia.

How is Liposuction Performed?

The surgery is performed through tiny incisions in locations that are not directly visible (belly button, hip fold, underarm, under the chin). Firstly, fluid is injected into the fatty tissue where the liposuction will be performed. Mixed into the fluid is an appropriate amount of adrenaline, which inhibits bleeding, and lidocaine, which has pain relieving action. Liposuction performed by injecting fluid into the tissue is called "“wet technique" and has become a standard in plastic surgery. The liposuction method through dry technique, that is without liquid injection, has almost completely been abandoned.
The liquid injection is followed by the insertion of liposuction cannulas which are specially designed to allow the removal of excess fat through negative pressure. Cannuals are available in different sizes and are selected according to the region that the liposuction will be performed. For example, irregularities can occur on the surface of the skin, if thick cannulas are used in an area with less fatty tissue and thinner skin.
In a carefully planned liposuction procedures, fine cannulas should be preferred. With the application of the proper technique and the use of fine cannulas, the risk of encountering undesirable outcomes after liposuction will be greatly reduced.

How Long on Average Does the Liposuction Procedure Take?

The duration of the operation varies from one to two hours, depending on the area to be treated.

What Should I be Aware of Before Liposuction Procedure?

    •  Smoking is a risk factor for any surgical procedure. It is recommended that you do not smoke for a month before and after the procedure, especially because it can cause discomfort and additional complications in wound healing.
    •  It is recommended that you do not take aspirin or medications that contain aspirin 2 weeks prior to surgery.
    •  It is recommended you do not take alcohol the night before the operation so that dehydration does not occur.
    •  You should not eat or drink anything 8 hours prior to the surgery.
    •  Following the surgery, we recommend that you have comfortable clothing with you for your stay in the hospital (tracksuit, nightgown with buttons down the front etc).

What Can I Expect Following the Liposuction Procedure?

Due to the mild anesthesia applied during the procedure, you will wake up quite quickly. After a few hours in the hospital, you can return home. An overnight stay in hospital is only necessary if liposuction has been applied to large areas.
Following the procedure, there will be various bandages in the areas where the liposuction was performed. The compression will ensure that swelling and bleeding is prevented. The bandages are reduced within a few days.
In the postoperative period, it is necessary to wear compression garments such as a corset for a certain period of time. However, if massage is used post-operatively, then this period is considerably reduced.

When Will I Start to See the Results of the Liposuction Procedure?

Immediately after the liposuction operation, it is difficult to see a reduction in the area where liposuction was performed. For the first few days, the size of the region may even seem to have increased in volume. This is caused by swelling in the area. When the swelling starts to subside a few days later, the result will gradually begin to reveal itself.
Another important thing to be aware of is that some of the fat tissue that is broken up is left inside the body, and will be removed from the area by the body itself within 2 to 3 months. This means it will be possible to see the exact result of the procedure in 2 to 3 months time
