What is Male Breast Reduction?
Gynecomastia is the surgical correction of overgrown breast tissue in men. Enlarged breasts in men can happen for two reasons.
Firstly, an increase in the amount of fat due to weight gain can lead to additional fat in the breast area. Secondly, an increase in volume can be experienced in the mammary glands themselves which is normally at a minimal level in men. In some cases, both of these reasons can apply to the growth of breast tissue. Your plastic surgeon will perform an examination and ask for an Ultrasound performed by a radiologist to determine the reason for the breast tissue growth.
How is Male Breast Reduction Surgery Performed?
The planning of the surgery depends on the cause of gynecomastia.
For growth characterized by an increase in excess fat without excess skin or sagging, Liposuction or Vaser Lipolysis procedures will suffice. Excess fat will be removed through the use of fine cannulas or vaser probes. A few small incisions will be made with a maximum diameter of 1cm to arrive at the desired result. If the excess fatty tissue has caused loose skin or a lot of growth, additional incisions may need to be made.
Liposuction or Vaser Lipolysis can not be applied in cases where the mammary gland has increased in size. In such cases, the tissue must be surgically removed. The tissue is taken through a crescent-shaped incision made at the lower border of the nipple.
In men, removing this tissue is important not only from an aesthetic point of view but also for health reasons. The risk of developing breast cancer is higher in men who have enlarged mammary glands than in woman. In principle, surgically removed tissue is sent to the laboratory for pathological examination.
Can Male Breast Growth Constitute a Health Problem?
Yes. In males, the removal of growing breast tissue is important not only from an aesthetic point of view but also for health reasons. The risk of developing breast cancer is higher in men who have enlarged mammary glands than in woman. Even though the surgery is conducted for cosmetic reasons, the removed tissue is sent to the laboratory for pathological examination.
What Kind of Anesthesia is Used in the Male Breast Reduction Procedure?
It is performed under general anesthesia or sedation. The type of anesthesia to be used will be determined after your consultation with your specialist.
What Should I be Aware of Before Male Breast Reduction Procedure?
• Smoking is a risk factor for any surgical procedure. It is recommended that you do not smoke for a month before and after the procedure, especially because it can cause discomfort and additional complications in wound healing. • It is recommended that you do not take aspirin or medications that contain aspirin 2 weeks prior to surgery. • It is recommended you do not take alcohol the night before the operation so that dehydration does not occur. • You should not eat or drink anything 8 hours prior to the surgery. • Following the surgery, we recommend that you have comfortable clothing with you for your stay in the hospital (tracksuit, pajamas with buttons down the front etc).
What Can I Expect Following the Male Breast Reduction Procedure?
You will be need to stay at the hospital for 1 night after the Male Breast Reduction procedure. Pain is not an expected following the surgery. In general, you will be able to return to your daily activities within a few hours after the surgery. After the procedure, you will need to use a compression garment or bandage for 4 to 6 weeks to help support the breast area and healing.
Although the time varies from one person to another, the average time to return to work is on average 3 to 4 days.
When Will I Start to See the Results of the Surgery?
The result is visible immediately after the procedure. However, it does take approximately 6 months for the the tissue to completely heal and for all swelling to subside.
Will There be Scarring as a Result of the Procedure?
Because there are different methods used for Male breast reduction procedures depending on its cause, the incisions and resulting scars differ for each one.
If only Liposuction or Vaser Lipolysis methods are used, the procedure is performed through several holes with incisions smaller than 1 cm. After healing, these small incisions are barely visible.
If the increased breast tissue is due to an increase in the size of the mammary gland, then the tissue is removed using an incision on the border of the lower half of the nipple. The incision is aesthetically sutured. The incision that remains after the surgery will be right on the border of the nipple. Because the incision will be carefully sutured by a plastic surgeon, positioned precisely at the border of the nipple and the color of the nipple will blend with that of the scar, it will not be very noticeable at all. If the patient has good wound healing, very often it is but a vague line.
In some cases, unconnected to the growth of breast tissue, the patient may experience excessive sagging and excess skin in the breast area. In these cases, a variety of incisions may be used on the breast depending upon the patient's needs. More detailed information will be provided to you by your specialist following your examination.
