In Which Situations is the Calf Augmentation Performed?
The calf is the part of the leg extending from the knee to the ankle. When there is insufficient volume in the calf area under the knee, it affects the appearance of the entire leg. Problems in proportion and the appearance of legs that are bowed or knock kneed result. In these situations, volume reinforcement in the calf region is a very effective solution.
How is Calf Augmentation Performed?
The main purpose of the calf enlargement operation is to provide volume to the calf area, which will address problems with disproportion, or legs that are do not appear straight. There are two basic methods used for this operation.
The first method is the use of the patient's own fat reserves to add additional volume to the calf region. The fat is extracted through liposuction. Very small holes of less than 1cm in diameter allow the extraction and transfer of the fat to the areas that lack volume. This process is called autologous fat grafting.
Alternatively, a silicone calf implant is used, which is inserted by making a small incision (a few centimetres) in the natural crease in the back of the knee.
The method that is most suitable for you will be determined by your doctor following your consultation.
How Long on Average Does the Calf Augmentation Procedure Take?
The calf augmentation procedure takes 2 hours on average.
What Kind of Anesthesia is Used in Calf Augmentation Procedure?
Whichever method is used, calf augmentation surgery is performed under general anesthesia.
Will I be Left with Scarring Following the Calf Augmentation Procedure?
In the case were a silicone implant will be used in the calf region, the incision to be made is only a few centimetres in length. In addition, the incision is made in the natural crease behind the knee which is indistinct enough not to be noticed.
In the case where the surgery is performed using the patient’s own fat, the very small holes that are used to transfer the fat to the calf area are less than 1cm in diameter, and once again are indistinct enough not to be noticed.
What Can I Expect Following the Calf Augmentation Procedure?
You will be expected to stay in the hospital one night after the procedure. A few hours after the operation you can easily return to your day to day activities. You can begin to walk and move around. You can return to work in 4-5 days provided that you take care of your calf area and do not engage in heavy lifting or strenuous work.
What can I Expect at my First Doctor’s Consultation?
At your first visit, your doctor will review the leg area and evaluate the proportion of your legs and how straight the legs appear. After the evaluation, your doctor will share with you his opinion of the approach that will achieve the best result.
