At the end of the marathon, we are often unsatisfied with the way our tummy looks.

What is a Tummy Tuck, When is it a Surgery of Choice?

With sudden weight loss or following pregnancy, the skin in the abdominal region cannot fully recover and can cause an undesirable appearance. Depending on the weight of the patient, excess fat may also be present under the skin. The muscles which provide tension to the anterior wall of the abdomen may also be separated. This causes the circumference of the abdomen to expand. The Tummy Tuck procedure, otherwise known as abdominoplasty, repairs weakened or separated abdominal muscles, and removes excess skin and fat to form smooth and firm abdomen. At the same time, if some deformation has occurred, the position and appearance of the belly button is improved and changed.

Can Liposuction, Laser Lipolysis, Vaser Lipo or Body Tightening Procedures Produce the Results I Desire in My Abdomen?

If the amount of fat on the anterior abdominal wall is not excessive, and the excess skin is minimal, that is, there is no sagging, then it is possible for improvements to be made to the abdomen area without a Tummy Tuck.
However, if there is a lot excess skin or sagging, especially if there is folding skin in the lower abdominal area towards the groin, the only option is a Tummy Tuck.
Almost all patients with increased abdominal fat and excess skin, also experience excess fat on the sides of their waist, often referred to as love handles, and also to varying degrees in the hip area. Plastic surgery procedures are performed using a holistic approach rather than focussing on a single area. In such cases, in addition to a Tummy Tuck, the excess fat around the waist and hips are addressed using an appropriate method such as Liposuction, Vaser Lipo, Laser Assisted Lipolysis. In this way, a much more well-proportioned and holistic result is achieved.

Am I a Suitable Candidate for the Tummy Tuck Procedure?

Your eligibility for the Tummy Tuck procedure will be determined through an examination by your surgeon, and an evaluation of your expectations for the surgery. The Tummy Tuck procedure, just like liposuction is not an operation for the achievement of weight loss.
If you are very overweight, it will be better to have the procedure after the achievement of some weight loss. Obesity negatively impacts the result of the surgery. Systemic damage caused by obesity can lead to many undesirable conditions such as difficulty in wound healing. In addition, weight loss achieved after the procedure will diminish the positive outcome achieved by the surgery.
As a result, patients who would would like to have the Tummy Tuck procedure should be candidates who have maintained a healthy weight for an extended period of time. If overweight, the healthiest and most appropriate option is to follow a diet and sports programme before considering surgery.

I am Planning Another Pregnancy. Should I Have a Tummy Tuck?

Pregnancy causes both the skin of the abdomen and the muscles that support the anterior abdominal wall to stretch. The stretching can cause excess skin and weakened muscles that do not recover. This condition can be easily corrected through the Tummy Tuck surgery.
Those patients who experienced a loss of form through pregnancy and who plan to get pregnant again, are advised to think carefully before moving forward with the procedure. A pregnancy after the Tummy Tuck procedure is likely to cause sagging and loosened skin again, and therefore should be postponed until all pregnancies are finalised.
Depending on the technique used, however, it is often possible to re-perform the Tummy Tuck procedure after a repeated pregnancy.

Is it Possible to Have a Tummy Tuck Alongside a Cesarean Section?

A practice that is gaining popularity, is for patients to have a Tummy Tuck simultaneously with a cesarean delivery. Although there are no strict rules or regulations around this, we cannot say that we condone the practice.
A planned combined surgery means that the cesarean section will be performed arbitrarily, which is not a situation that can support maternal or child health. Natural childbirth is the best option, and cesarean births offer many disadvantages in comparison.
There are also other drawbacks of performing a Tummy Tuck coupled with childbirth. Combining a Tummy Tuck operation with intra-abdominal interventions increases the risk of some complications, such as bleeding. Alongside this, since your movement after the Tummy Tuck procedure will be limited, you will have to spend at least a few more days in bed and you will not be able to be with your newborn baby as much as you would like. Whether you have a normal delivery or a cesarean there is a 3-6 month recovery process for abdominal tissues after childbirth. After this period has elapsed, it will be much more appropriate to perform the surgery on the excess skin remaining after this healing period.

I am a New Mother. How Long Should I Wait Before I Have a Tummy Tuck?

How is a Tummy Tuck Performed?

The Tummy Tuck Procedure can be performed in two different ways. The first is the classic full Tummy Tuck, and the second is the mini Tummy Tuck applied in cases where there is less excess skin.
There is no difference between the two in terms of incisions or the scar created. The incision is made in the same place as a caesarean section incision, only slightly longer. In full Tummy Tuck procedures, the definite length may increase, depending on the amount of excess skin and sagging in the abdomen area, however the incision still remains in the bikini region. The most important difference between the two procedures concerns the belly button. In cases where there is too much abdominal skin, the belly button is revised at the end of the operation. The reason for this is that the downward movement of the stretching process changes the position of the belly button. The rearrangement of the belly button is also an important opportunity to achieve an attractive and ideal appearance of the abdominal region.
In both methods, excess abdominal skin is removed to provide firmness and tautness. In addition to excess skin removal, excess fat is removed to reveal a thinner appearance through liposuction, vaser lipo, laser lipolysis (Laser Assisted Lipolysis). In this way, the abdomen is left firm and smooth, with excess skin and fat removed.

What is a Full Tummy Tuck and a Mini Tummy Tuck?

A full Tummy Tuck (full abdominoplasty) is the term used for those procedures conducted for patients who have a large amount of excess skin and sagging, where the belly button is moved to achieve an ideal position and result. A mini Tummy Tuck (mini abdominoplasty) is the term used for those patients who have minimal excess skin and sagging that is mainly in the lower abdominal area, who do not need their belly button repositioned.

What Can I Expect at My First Doctor's Consultation?

When you contact a Plastic Surgeon Specialist regarding a Tummy Tuck operation, your doctor will ask you questions and record information about your general medical condition before examining you. Your doctor will ask you your age, your previous surgeries or illnesses, the number of births you have had and childbirth delivery methods. In addition to these questions your doctor will ask; whether you have chronic conditions such as diabetes or hypertension, if any, the names of medicines you use regularly, your use of cigarettes and alcohol. Your surgeon will conduct an examination to assess the condition of your abdominal skin, the amount of fat tissue, and the position of your abdominal muscles.
As a result of the examination and information provided your surgeon will tell you the best procedure to achieve a firm and smooth abdomen.

What Kind of Anesthesia is Used in Tummy Tuck Procedures?

General anesthesia is used for both the full Tummy Tuck and the mini Tummy Tuck procedures.

How Long on Average Does the Tummy Tuck Procedure Take?

The duration of the operation depends on the procedure chosen, the full Tummy Tuck or the mini Tummy Tuck. The full Tummy Tuck operation lasts 2 to 3 hours, while the mini Tummy Tuck procedure lasts 1.5 to 2.5 hours on average. However, if liposuction, vaser lipo, or laser lipolysis will be applied in addition to the Tummy Tuck procedure for excess fat in the abdomen, around the waist or on the hips, then the procedure time will be longer.

What Should I be Aware of Before the Tummy Tuck Procedure?

    •  If you are very overweight, it will be better to have the procedure after the achievement of some weight loss. Obesity negatively impacts the result of the surgery. Systemic damage caused by obesity can lead to many undesirable conditions such as difficulty in wound healing. In addition, weight loss achieved after the procedure will diminish the positive outcome achieved by the surgery. •  Smoking is a risk factor for any surgical procedure. It is recommended that you do not smoke for a month before and after the Tummy Tuck procedure, especially because it can cause discomfort and additional complications in wound healing.
    •  It is recommended that you do not take aspirin or medications that contain aspirin 2 weeks prior to surgery.
    •  It is recommended you do not take alcohol the night before the operation so that dehydration does not occur.
    •  You should not eat or drink anything 8 hours prior to the surgery.
    •  Following the surgery, we recommend that you have comfortable clothing with you for your stay in the hospital (tracksuit, nightgown with buttons down the front etc).

What Can I Expect Following the Tummy Tuck Procedure?

After your surgery you will need to stay in hospital for one or two days. You will be protected from infection through the use of antibacterial agents, and provided with appropriate medication so that you will experience a pain free night. It is expected that you will experience pain following the surgery especially during the first night, therefore you will be given a strong analgesic during your hospital stay so that you will experience a pain free night. The following day your general condition will be evaluated, and you will be released from hospital.
If your stomach muscles were repaired and tightened during the surgery, we recommend that you place pillows under your feet and upper back while laying down and sleeping. While standing you should not stand completely upright. These recommendations are made so that you do not stretch your newly repaired muscles during this early stage. If your muscles were repaired, it is normal for you to experience some muscle pain while coughing or other activities for a few days. If your stomach muscles were not repaired or tightened then you will not need to take note of the recommendations made above, and your return to everyday activities will be much quicker.
You will need to use a compression garments after the surgery. Using the compression garment for 4 to 6 weeks will be necessary to support and aid the healing process of your newly tightened abdomen. Using the compression garment will help you feel supported and you will need to make sure that you use it regularly.
During the surgery most of the sutures used to close the incision will be dissolvable, this means that they will be absorbed by the body. After 10 days have passed, a few stitches used that are undissolvable will be removed by your surgeon.

When will I Start to See the Results of the Surgery?

Even though there will be some swelling in the abdomen area following the Tummy Tuck surgery, you will be able to see the result immediately. The swelling will subside within a few months, revealing the final result.
