What Causes Breasts to Sag?

Genetic susceptibility, childbirth, the effects of gravity or weight loss can cause the breasts to sag. The sagging experienced can be to varying degrees and can be rectified through Breast Lift surgery (mastopexy).
What is Considered to be an Attractive Breast?
Although the concept of "beautiful breasts" varies from society to society and personal taste, it is possible to talk about some general criteria.

Let's start with the position of the breast tissue. For a person of average height and weight there should be a distance of 19-22 cm from the collarbone to to the nipple of the breast. However, this size may vary depending on such variables as anatomical structure, the size of the breast tissue and the size of the patient. For example, if you are 190 cm tall, then the 19-22cm distance is too short.

Ideal breast size also differs from society to society and from person to person. Of course, it is possible to talk about the ideal size for a person of average height which the majority of people find to be ideal. The distance from the collarbone to the nipple is 19-22 cm, the distance between the nipple and the lower border of the breast is 8-9 cm and the mean diameter of the nipple is 4 cm. These measurements are perceived as attractive by the majority of people.

My Breasts are Sagging and Not as Elevated as I Would Like Them to be. How is the Breast Lift Surgery Performed?

There are many techniques to choose from. The technique chosen will be based on the condition of the breast tissue and the patient. Depending on the technique used, the incisions and the resulting scars will vary. Your doctor will evaluate your situation in detail and will determine the most appropriate technique, taking into account the breast shape you would like to achieve.

My Breasts are Sagging and Have Lost Volume. Which Technique Would be Best for Me?

If the volume of the breast tissue is reduced, the required volume may not be achieved with the breast lift operation (mastopexy). The operation can be combined with the placement of an implant (such as silicone gel) under the breast tissue to restore lost volume. Your doctor will be able to determine whether you need such a combination by evaluating the elevation, size, volume and anatomical structure of your breast tissue coupled with your expectations for the desired outcome.

My Breasts Look Deflated, and I Want Them to Look Firmer and Fuller. Which Technique Would be Best for Me?

If the breast tissue is not excessively sagging and the shape is suitable, a silicone implant may be a more appropriate way to achieve an effective result.

Will I Experience any Problems Breastfeeding Following a Breast Lift Surgery?

One of the most important points that patients need to be informed of regarding breast lift surgery is breastfeeding. Depending on the technique to be applied, there may be reduced breastfeeding ability or an inability to breastfeed in a single breast or both breasts after breast lift procedure. This occurs as a result of the nipple being moved for higher placement and it is not realistic to be able to predict what rate of loss in breastfeeding function will be experienced. Rates have been determined in various studies in this regard, but the patient must consider the possibility that she will not be able to breastfeed at all after the operation. In general, we do not consider the procedure for women who have never had a child, or who plan to give birth in the future.

If I Have Another Child After the Procedure will I Experience Sagging in My Breasts Again?

There is a possibility that the growth and shrinkage that will occur in the breast tissue after childbirth will negatively affect the results achieved by surgery. Considering the the risk of not being able to breastfeed, and the possibility of negatively affecting the result of the surgery, postponing the breast lift (mastopexy) operation until all childbirth is complete would be the most appropriate option.

I Would Like to Have Breast Lift Surgery Even Though There is a Possibility of Having Another Child. Can I Have the Surgery?

If, despite all of this, if you feel that your sagging breasts are negatively impacting your quality of life and the resolution of this problem is a "priority" for you then Breast Lift surgery is of course possible in this case. The final decision will be taken by you and your specialist as a result of carefully evaluating your situation together.

It Appears Possible that My Breast Lift Can be Performed Through the Placement of an Implant. Will I Experience a Loss in My Ability to Breastfeed?

No. There is not risk to the loss of breastfeeding ability through the use of a silicone implant to achieve a breast lift.

What Can I Expect at My First Doctor's Consultation?

Your Plastic Surgeon will listen to your expectations for the surgery during your first consultation. Your doctor will perform an evaluation of your current situation and then share the details of the procedure to be performed in order to achieve the desired results.
On the day of the surgery, drawings will be made in preparation for the surgery while you are still in your room. This phase, which is necessary to be done while standing, is the most important step for the procedure to be performed as breast reduction surgery is carried out based on preoperative planning and drawings.

In this drawing process, your doctor will mark the different reference points to be used on the body. The doctor will determine through measurements the placement of your current nipple and compare this with your height and anatomical structure, deciding where the new and ideal position for the nipple should be. Then, according to the technique to be used, further drawings will be done to bring both the nipple and the breast tissue into its ideal shape and to the correct elevation.

How Long on Average does Breast Lift Surgery Take?

Generally speaking, breast lift surgeries are usually much simpler than breast reduction procedures. The procedure lasts 2 to 5 hours on average, depending on the technique to be used and whether or not a silicone implant will be used in combination with the procedure.

What Kind of Anesthesia is Used in Breast Lift Surgery?

The procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia.

Will I Have Scars Following the Breast Lift Procedure?

The incisions to be used in breast lift surgery and the resulting scars will vary according to the technique to be used. Your doctor will determine the appropriate technique for you by taking into account your expectations as well as your physical examination.
The incisions can be placed in the following ways;

    •  Around the areola only or
    •  In the shape of a lollipop (incisions being made around the areola and then vertically down the center of the lower half of the breast) or
    •  In the shape of a lollipop as above but with the addition of a horizontal incision along the breast crease

This will depend on your doctor's assessment following the physical examination, your breast shape, your anatomy, and the desired change to be achieved.

What Should I be Aware of Before the Procedure?

    •  Smoking is a risk factor for any surgical procedure. It is recommended that you do not smoke for a month before and after the Breast Lift procedure, especially because it can cause discomfort and additional complications in wound healing.
    •  It is recommended that you do not take aspirin or medications that contain aspirin 2 weeks prior to surgery.
    •  It is recommended you do not take alcohol the night before the operation so that dehydration does not occur.
    •  You should not eat or drink anything 8 hours prior to the surgery.
    •  Following the surgery, we recommend that you have comfortable clothing with you for your stay in the hospital (tracksuit, nightgown with buttons down the front etc).

What Can I Expect Following the Breast Lift Procedure?

You are usually hospitalised for one night following the surgery. There is usually no pain, or very little pain following the procedure. In the case of pain, analgesic medication can easily provide relief.
After the surgery, you can return everyday activities and work after 4 to 5 days of rest at home. Most of your sutures will be absorbed by the body and disappear over time. A small number of insoluble sutures will be removed by your doctor the 10th day following surgery.
If silicone implants were combined with your procedure it is important that you do the massages recommended by your physician following the surgery.
