What is the Possible Reason for my Breasts Being so Large?

Causes such as genetic factors, certain diseases, pregnancy or some medications may cause excessive growth of the mammary gland.
When you consider a breast reduction procedure, your plastic surgeon will help you achieve the best possible shape, firmness and size for your breasts, a symbol of female beauty.
What is Considered to be an Attractive Breast?
Although the concept of “beautiful breasts” varies from society to society and personal taste, it is possible to talk about some general criteria.
Let's start with the position of the breast tissue. For a person of average height and weight there should be a distance of 19-22 cm from the collarbone to to the nipple of the breast. However, this size may vary depending on such variables as anatomical structure, the size of the breast tissue and the size of the patient. For example, if you are 190 cm tall, then the 19-22cm distance is too short.
Ideal breast size also differs from society to society and from person to person. Of course, it is possible to talk about the ideal size for a person of average height which the majority of people find to be ideal. The distance from the collarbone to the  nipple is 19-22 cm, the distance between the nipple and the lower border of the breast is 8-9 cm and the mean diameter of the nipple is 4 cm. These measurements are perceived as attractive by the majority of people.

Can My Breasts be the Cause of my Neck and Back Pains?

Excessive breast size causes shoulder, back and neck aches and affects both your comfort and your quality of life considerably. In addition, daily life becomes even more difficult as a result of undesirable conditions such as irritation caused to the skin under the breasts. Thankfully, it is possible to increase the quality of your life through breast reduction procedure.

Has My Breasts Size Contributed to Them Sagging?

Almost all patients with large breasts develop sagging and stretching due to the excessive load placed on the skin.

How are Large Breasts Reduced in Size?

There are many techniques developed for breast reduction. The technique to be applied will depend entirely on the patient's individual condition. After an evaluation of the shape, size and amount of sagging of the breast, and taking into consideration the expectations of the patient, the most ideal technique is decided by the plastic surgeon.

Where will the Scars be Placed in a Breast Reduction Procedure?

The scarring experienced following surgery varies according to the technique used during the surgery. Incisions may be made in the form of a lollipop which involves incisions being made around the areola and then vertically down the center of the lower half of the breast. Sometimes an additional incision may need to be made horizontally along the breast crease. The incisions used during the operation are sutured according to the principles of plastic surgery to provide the best possible result in the scarring.
It is also possible to minimize the traces that may occur,  by the help of applications such as Fractional Laser. These applications are usually considered 6 months after surgery, which is the time required for the completion of wound healing.

Will I Experience any Problems Breastfeeding Following Breast Reduction Surgery?

One of the most important points that patients need to be informed about breast reduction surgery is breastfeeding. Depending on the technique applied, there may be reduced breastfeeding ability or an inability to breastfeed in a single breast or both breasts. This occurs as a result of the nipple being moved for higher placement and the breast tissue being removed. It is not realistic to be able to predict what rate of loss in breastfeeding function will be experienced. Rates have been determined in various studies in this regard, but the patient must consider the possibility that she will not be able to breastfeed at all after the operation. In general, we do not consider the breast lift procedure for women who have never had a child, or who plan to give birth in the future.

If I Have Another Child After the Procedure, will I Experience Sagging or Deformity in my Breasts Again?

There is a possibility that the growth and shrinkage that will occur in the breast tissue after childbirth will negatively affect the results achieved by surgery. Considering the the risk of not being able to breastfeed, and the possibility of negatively affecting the result of the surgery, postponing the breast reduction operation until all childbirth is complete would be the most appropriate option.

I Would Like to Have Breast Reduction Surgery Even Though There is a Possibility of Having Another Child. Can I Have the Surgery?

Despite all of this, if you feel that the size of your breasts are negatively impacting your quality of life and the resolution of this problem is a "priority" for you then Breast Reduction surgery is of course possible in this case. The final decision will be made by you and your plastic surgeon as a result of carefully evaluating your situation together.

What Kind of Anesthesia is Used in Breast Reduction Surgery?

Breast Reduction surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia.

How Long on Average Does the Breast Reduction Surgery Take?

The duration of the surgery, on average, is 2 to 4 hours.

What Can I Expect at My First Doctor's Consultation?

Your Plastic Surgeon will listen to your expectations for the surgery during your first consultation. Your doctor will perform an evaluation of your current situation and then share the details of the procedure to be performed in order to achieve the desired results.
On the day of the surgery, drawings will be made in preparation for the surgery while you are still in your room. This phase, which is necessary to be done while standing, is the most important step for the procedure to be performed as breast reduction surgery is carried out based on preoperative planning and drawings.

What Should I be Aware of Before the Procedure?

    •  Smoking is a risk factor for any surgical procedure. It is recommended that you do not smoke for a month before and after the Breast Reduction procedure, especially because it can cause discomfort and additional complications in wound healing.
    •  It is recommended that you do not take aspirin or medications that contain aspirin 2 weeks prior to surgery.
    •  It is recommended not taking alcohol the night before the operation so that dehydration does not occur.
    •  You should not eat or drink anything 8 hours prior to the surgery.
    •  Following the surgery, we recommend that you have comfortable clothing with you for your stay in the hospital (tracksuit, nightgown with buttons down the front etc).

What Can I Expect Following the Breast Reduction Procedure?

You are usually hospitalised for one night following the surgery. There is usually no pain, or very little pain following the procedure. In the case of pain, analgesic medication can easily provide relief. After the surgery, you can return everyday activities and work after 4 to 5 days of rest at home. It is important that you do not do any heavy lifting, or heavy work during the recovery period. It is also important to restrict arm movements during this phase.
Most of your sutures will be absorbed by the body and disappear over time. A small number of insoluble sutures will be removed by your doctor the 10th day following surgery.
In the first days following the procedure, your breasts will appear bigger than you expect because of operation-related swelling. A few days later, when the swelling begins to subside, the result will be more visible. As is the case with all surgical cosmetic procedures, it will take up to 6 months for the swelling to completely subside. However, 70-80% of the desired result will be achieved by the end of the first month. The changes following this period will be minor.
