What is a Facelift?
A facelift (rhytidectomy) is based on the principle of bringing the skin and tissues on the face back to their original position. The changes caused by ageing that are reversed through a facelift are as follows;
• The fat found in the cheek area loosens and moves downward
• Because of this, the lines starting at the nose and descending to the corners of the mouth deepen.
• Due to the displacement of the fat in the cheek region, there are depressions caused in the under eye region and along the cheekbones.
• Due to the weakening of the muscle tissue, jowls are formed around the jawline due to sagging
• Excess fat accumulation and sagging tissue result in the what is commonly referred to as a double chin
• Wrinkles are caused by the general loosening of the skin and the supporting tissues beneath.
If I Have a Facelift, will I Lose my Natural Appearance?
The first and foremost principle of today's cosmetic surgery procedures is to achieve a natural result. The results that were achieved in the early years of cosmetic surgery were exaggerated and far from natural. Just has nose jobs produced very small noses with tips that were overly lifted, facelifts resulted in over-stretched skin with faces that had lost their natural expressions. However, nowadays both patients' and plastic surgeons' first and foremost expectation for the outcome of surgery is a natural result.
The key to achieving a natural outcome in facelift surgery is that the surgeon must treat each of the patients separately and base the surgery on their individual needs. The face should not be over-stretched, and the end result should produce the same face the patient had 10-15 years ago. First of all, the severity of the changes that have occured in the face through the ageing process should be determined. The aim must be to restore the face to its original form, never to change its structure or waiver from its normal appearance. If the facelift procedure is carried out in this way, it is possible to achieve both a youthful and a natural result.
How is the Facelift Procedure Performed?
Facelift surgery creates a significant difference in the appearance of the face and has become a much easier operation due to innovations in the field in recent years. The upper face area is no longer part of the surgical procedure, and this is one of the most significant of these innovations. Removal of the crows feet around the eyelids, removal of wrinkles in the forehead area, and the lifting of the eyebrows used to be carried out with the facelift procedure. Now that Botulinum Toxin applications have become a part of cosmetic procedures, they are not longer part of the facelift procedures. Botulinum Toxin application
, which provides very good results in the upper face area, is now a classed as gold standard.
With the development of the surgical techniques applied in the middle and lower regions of the face, the area in which the surgery is performed has been narrowed. Successful face lift operations are performed with incisions created only in front of and behind the ear.
For these reasons, facelift surgery has become much easier to implement than was the case 10 years ago. The duration and risks of the surgery are reduced and the duration for healing is also very short. Nowadays, patients are able to return to their normal lives within a few days after the surgery. Techniques such as MACS-Lift and S-Lift are the most preferred of these new procedures.
Can the Ageing Look Created by My Eyelids be Improved During a Facelift Procedure?
Yes. The goal of the facelift procedure is to reverse the signs of ageing and this should be considered holistically taking into consideration the whole face. If signs of ageing such as excess skin or bags around the eyelids are present, then eyelid surgery
should be remedied during the facelift procedure also.
If there is excess fat under the chin area, commonly referred to as a double chin, the fat should be removed through liposuction. These surgical procedures are all minor and there is no reason why they cannot be performed in combination. For the upper face, Botulinum toxin
will be applied following the surgery which will provide both satisfactory and satisfying results in eliminating the signs of age.
Will the Facelift Procedure Improve the Quality of My Skin?
Just as the secret of a stylish dress is the quality of the fabric, the freshness of the face is related to the quality of the skin.
When the facelift operation is combined with applications such as PRP
, PRP Boost Laser
the effect obtained from the operation is further increased. Before these procedures can be performed, a suitable period of time must elapse between the facelift surgery and the application of one of the methods above. A striking and youthful change has been obtained in the skin following the facelift surgery, and it can further benefit from these procedures to add moisture and elasticity.

If your first visit is a virtual meeting over the internet, sharing as much information as you can about your situation and general condition will be important to the evaluation process.
What Kind of Anesthesia is Used in the Facelift Procedure?
General anesthesia is used for the facelift procedure.
How Long on Average Does the Facelift Procedure Take?
On average the procedure takes 2 to 4 hours.
What Should I be Aware of Before the Procedure?
• Smoking is a risk factor for any surgical procedure. It is recommended that you do not smoke for a month before and after the Facelift procedure, especially because it can cause discomfort and additional complications in wound healing.
• It is recommended that you do not take aspirin or medications that contain aspirin 2 weeks prior to surgery.
• It is recommended you do not take alcohol the night before the operation so that dehydration does not occur.
• You should not eat or drink anything 8 hours prior to the surgery.
• Following the surgery, we recommend that you have comfortable clothing with you for your stay in the hospital (tracksuit, nightgown with buttons down the front etc).
What Can I Expect Following the Facelift Procedure?
After the surgery, you will wake up in your room with a special face bandage that has been applied to limit the swelling that will occur in your face. This bandage will help control the amount of swelling experienced, and help prevent any bleeding following the surgery. The bandage will be used especially for the first 2 days following the surgery.
Just as in all surgeries, swelling (edema) is a natural result that will follow the facelift procedure. In the first few days, the swelling in your face will be quite noticeable. The swelling will subside within a few days and will be significantly decreased within a week. Within the first two weeks most of the swelling will have disappeared, however swelling will fully subside in up to 6 months.
The incisions in front of and behind the ear will be covered with tape for the first few days, and then be removed. You will be able to return to your normal activities and everyday life in a week.
Will I Have Scarring After the Facelift Surgery?
Facelift surgery is performed by using incisions that start in front of the ear, go under the earlobe to then to the back of the ear. Since the incisions are behind the ear and the lines that remain following the surgery are barely noticeable, there is no concerns regarding the visibility of the incisions.
A small scar may be created in the form of a thin and barely noticeable line in front of the ear. This scar is placed in the natural existing fold of the ear or is created on the inside of the ear protrusion. Again, for this reason, there are no concerns regarding the visibility of the incisions.
However, wound healing and scarring is not only dependent on the placement of the incision or how the incisions are sutured. The genetic properties of the patient will also affect wound healing and scarring. If the patient has a tendency towards the formation of hypertrophic scars or keloid-like scars, additional measures may be needed following the surgery.
How Long will the Effects of the Facelift Last?
The aim of the Facelift operation is to turn back the clock. However, skin ageing will continue after the facelift operation. The reversal of the signs of ageing will last for up to 4 to 7 years following a well performed face lift operation. Since it is not possible to freeze time, the ageing process will continue over time, and the signs of ageing will slowly begin to recur.
The Facelift surgery is a medical procedure, and as with all other cosmetic surgery procedures should be performed by a Plastic Surgeon Specialist.
